Introduction

My inbox has been flooded lately by business coaches offering to teach me or help me develop AI tools.

It made me pause and ask myself a bigger question: In a profession rooted in human connection, what will make yoga teachers truly stand out as technology continues to evolve?

There’s no doubt that AI and other technologies are becoming more common in our daily lives. Even yoga teachers can use AI technology in thoughtful ways to support their businesses, organize ideas or spark creativity.

I often encourage my yoga teacher training students to remember that while books, mentors, and technology can all be valuable resources, our greatest strength as a teacher is our own personal practice.

As yoga teachers, we are here to share in a tradition that has always been carried down person to person. We embody the spiritual knowledge through practice, presence and devotion.

Technology can organize information, but it cannot replace the experience of sitting with a teacher (online or offline) practicing with a community, and discovering your own wisdom within.

When we teach yoga from our own practice, our students feel the difference.

There’s a huge opportunity for yoga teachers to shine as technology continues to evolve.

Digital tools make it easier than ever to create content and reach more people. At the same time, they remind us just how valuable authentic human connection really is.

People are looking for spaces where they can belong, be seen and build genuine relationships.

As yoga teachers, we’re uniquely positioned to create those spaces.

An Invitation For Yoga Teachers To Create Community

One beautiful trend we’re seeing is the rise of micro-communities.

Micro-communities are small groups built around a shared interest, with fewer members. This offers a space where everyone can be heard, not just a select few influencers.

In online spaces, this may look like a Discord server, a WhatsApp group, a subreddit, or a yoga teacher’s members-only community.

In real life, it makes the connections we foster in our shalas and practice spaces stronger than ever.

We can create micro-communities with yoga classes, Zoom calls, workshops, newsletters—whatever we feel called to create. The more personal we get, the more precious the experience.

How To Foster A Micro-Community With Your Yoga Students

Alongside learning new tools and technologies, don’t lose sight of what makes practicing yoga with you special. Continue stepping up and sharing from the heart.

It’s worth regularly asking yourself where your time and energy are best spent. While technology can support your work, your greatest impact will always come from your personal practice and heartfelt offerings.

Rather than feeling like we need to constantly perform online, we can focus on creating meaningful experiences that keep students coming back.

If you are inspired to foster a deeper sense of community, here are a few journaling prompts:

  • How can you create a space where all students feel truly seen, heard and valued?

  • What are your unique gifts and practices, and in what ways can you share them more authentically with your students?

  • Where in your teaching do you feel you truly connect with students, and how can you create more of these magical moments?

Simple Actions You Can Take Today To Create A Yoga Micro-Community

Whether you are creating an in-person, online (or hybrid) community, here are some actions you can take to welcome your students.

  • Set an intention for connection. Become more mindful about how you interact with your students and consciously devote more time and attention to creating community. Keep the focus not only on what you teach, but on how your students experience belonging.

  • Plan for some interpersonal time. Give yourself time to chat with students before and after class. Learn their names and listen to what brings them to yoga. If you understand your students’ needs better, you can create more valuable offerings.

  • Set an example for socializing. Speak to all members of your class equally, rather than a select few you know well. Look for ways you can bring quieter students into the conversation.

  • Create consistent containers. Offer a way for students to include you in their routines. It takes consistency to build a community and keep them coming back week after week or month after month.

  • Decide where you will show up. Whether it’s arriving to class extra early or creating an online membership, make sure your students know where they can reliably find you.

  • Show up authentically. Share inspiration from your own practice and experiences.

Technology will continue to evolve, and so will the ways we teach and connect. But the heart of yoga has always been about relationships, whether that’s with students or with ourselves.

It’s your time to shine as a community leader. Share yoga freely, with all your heart, voice and spirit.
